Currency
The euro has been the official Portuguese currency since January 2002.
VAT and Taxes
If you reside outside the European Union, you are entitled to a VAT refund on your purchases. Make sure the store participates in the tax refund scheme and don't forget to request the tax-free document at the time of purchase.

Madeira Islands currently have no restrictions on the entry and exit of passengers.
Emergency Number
The number 112 is the European Emergency Number and SHOULD ONLY be used in emergency situations.

The archipelago has several hospitals. The public hospital you should go to in case of emergency is Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
